Steps from the beach, this bungalow is a well-appointed retreat with no hassle or fuss. Thanks Mia! This beach house is a wonderful example of a quirky but comfortable Bodega Bay place to stay!
It overlooks the Salmon River as well as the beach. It was beautiful and restful and a perfect get away from the city. The only suggestion is that maybe housekeeping could have done a quick run through before we arrived, especially if the house had not been rented in a while--especially for the amount it rents out for. Things like the drain traps were full of hair, there were webs all over, there were extra pillows but no pillow cases to put on them, and there was one singular dish towel which was absolutely covered in mouse droppings.
The rental folks were kind and helpful, though, nd got back to us quickly when we asked for an early check-in. Overall a very nice stay. Site header. To help with bookings, call our support phone number Trip Boards. Login Traveler Login Owner Login. Sign up.

Archaeologists and historians of the First Colony Foundation have followed up a map discovery with three years of investigation. Foundation officers will describe the fieldwork, present evidence for their findings, and announce future research plans.
Questions from the public will be entertained at the conclusion of the briefing, after which FCF researchers will be available for interviews. The First Colony Foundation believes that it may have uncovered archaeological evidence of Roanoke colonists presence at Site X in that area. The artifact assemblage from the limited area that has been excavated so far, particularly the relatively large amount of Surrey-Hampshire Border ware, as well as sherds of North Devon plain baluster jar, which were provisioning jars for sea voyages, leads us to postulate that these finds are the result of Roanoke colonist activity at the site and are not related to later English settlement in the area.
The excavation of domestic table wares from several different diagnostic vessels along with other less diagnostic, but possibly contemporaneous artifacts, strongly suggests that the above mentioned European presence was of a longer duration and the activities different from those recorded for the pre English exploration of the lower Chowan River basin. Further excavation should help determine the nature and duration of the apparent Elizabethan presence at Site X.

At the present, the First Colony Foundation does not contend that Site X on its own represents the relocation site for the majority of colonists. It is perhaps that of a small group of survivors such as those indicated on the Zuniga manuscript map. Planning for a Potentially Exciting Excavation 9 months ago.
Bertie County Archaeological Survey 1 year ago. New Board Members 1 year ago. Honoring Joachim Gans 1 year ago.A large county in the northeastern part of North Carolina, Bertie originated in when the state legislature decided to divide the county from Chowan.
Bertie has a distinct advantage over other counties in the region because of its rich soil sustained by the rivers that flowing along and within its borders.
The Chowan and Roanoke Rivers, along with the Cashie River, have bolstered the agricultural economy of Bertie since the first Native Americans inhabited the land. The initial tribe that dwelt in present-day Bertie were the Tuscarora, a tribal branch of the northern Iroquois.
In the middle of the seventeenth century, English explorers and hunters traversed the land in search of fur goods, trade opportunities with the Indians, and open land for future settlers.
The influx of the white traders and trappers provoked the Tuscarora which eventually led to the Tuscarora War InGeorge Yeardley commissioned Batts to explore the Albermarle Sound region for fertile farm land. Batts searched the region for a year, and his survey of the land eventually led to a land agreement between Yeardley and Chief Kiscatanewh of the Pasquotank.Denon 8500
Given a large tract of land in present-day Bertie County, Yeardley agreed to build Chief Kiscatanewh an English-style house. In addition, Yeardley also constructed a house for Batts inand the small twenty-foot square house served as a dwelling place for Batts during the fur-trading season.
However, Batts moved away from Bertie after being overrun by the Tuscarora inbut the house continued to function as a fur-trading post during the next fifty years.
Indian Woods, a large expanse of land in southwestern section of Bertie, was once a reservation for the tribe that aided the English settlers during the Tuscarora War.

Algonquian Indian artifacts have been found on the site.
